Mirrors as a Must Have: Do You Know the Rules of Their Placement?

The power of mirrors in space is sometimes underestimated. However, mirrors open up a space perfectly, they can play with light, they are a beautiful addition to a room and last but not least, they fulfil their practical role. Mirror placement has its rules, though. Let's take a look at them.

Where to Go with the Mirror?

First of all, consider what kind of room you are looking at. Mirrors are definitely suitable for dark and narrow spaces. From a practical point of view, it's usually the hallway, bathroom and wardrobe.

In terms of height, the placement of the mirror will depend on what you want it to reflect. Generally, however, it should be positioned so that both the tallest and shortest member of the family from about 6 years old and up can see in it and should not "cut" anyone's head off when looking in the mirror. Speaking of reflection - before hanging the mirror, check what is opposite it. If it is hung opposite a fancy item such as a painting or a valuable piece of furniture, this will make the item even more meaningful.

How to Enlarge and Lighten the Room?

If your business has long, narrow corridors, it is always advisable to place the mirror on the opposite side of the corridor. Never at the end of the corridor, otherwise you will achieve a visually longer corridor. The rule of thumb here is - the bigger the mirror, the bigger and deeper the space will appear. The mirrored surface should catch and reflect light into the whole room. That's why the right solution is to place it opposite the window or directly next to the window. Placing the mirror between the windows is also an interesting and very effective solution.

Where Does the Mirror Not Belong?

Avoid placing mirrors in places where they might reflect an unsightly part of the interior. The mirror also does not belong on the wall opposite the door. Many interior designers do not recommend ceiling mirrors, which look unpleasant. A mirror also doesn't belong in rooms where it might distract and disturb a guest, such as in a study or opposite a desk.

What Type of Mirror to Choose?

Think of your interior as a whole. One small mirror on a large wall will look lost and insignificant. If it is to be the focal point of a room, it should be large and have an interesting shape or frame. Don't be afraid to use a large mirror in a small space. A tall mirror leaning against the wall is a stylish and practical decorative element even in a fairly small room. A long horizontal mirror will emphasise the width of the room, a tall vertical mirror will emphasise the height of the room. The square shape deepens the room and the round shape softens it.

Remember that every space is specific, so we recommend trying several options before fixing the mirror. What type of mirror you choose and where you place it should simply be a reflection of your needs.
